About the Estate:
Robin Island is rich in ecological diversity, there are huge number of birds like Indian Robin, parrot, mocking bird, malabar grey hornbill, greater racket- tailed Drongo, red whiskered bulbul, wagtail, barbets, owl, woodpecker, wild civet, porcupine, greater coucal that reside in their own natural habitat.
Earlier, Robin Island Estate was just a part of Kari Kund (Dark Hill) which was owned by the Royals of Coorg and a small part was shared with the Britishers back in 1800s, that had some coffee plants growing in those forest, wildly. Until, the year 1895, when the local inhabitants of the Coorg (also known as Kodavas) proved their allegiance to their then Royals and the Britishers, who decided to gift a major part of their land (now Hoddur Village) to the loyal Chowrira family. Later, the forest was transformed into well planned and maintained Coffee plantation by Chowrira Johnny Belliappa in 1955. He was mesmerised by the number of Indian Robin Bird that used to reside in their plantation. The baton was passed on to Mr. Robin Kariappa, the next generation of the Chowrira family. The name of the plantation was an inspiration because of the Robin bird that was popularly found just in the plantation and also it was called an Island because the plantation is surrounded all sides by the roads heading towards different villages.
